Industrial vacuum solutions for sandblasting

Enhance workplace safety while maximizing process efficiency

Sandblasting is a surface finishing technique used to clean, smooth, or prepare a material by removing paint, rust, and other contaminants. A jet of abrasive material is projected at high speed onto the surface to be treated, modifying its texture or removing unwanted layers. Metal abrasives can be reused several times before disposal. Industrial vacuums are an efficient solution for optimizing the collection and recovery of these grits.

Industrial applications of sandblasting

Depending on the material and type of abrasive used, sandblasting is used in many different fields, including the metalworking industry, shipbuilding, the automotive sector, construction, and restoration. It is used for various fundamental purposes, all related to the preparation or maintenance of metal surfaces.

  • Surface cleaning
  • Preparation for painting or surface treatments
  • Removal of surface defects
  • Industrial maintenance

Recovery of grit

An industrial vacuum is the most effective solution for collecting abrasive grit after sandblasting, reducing cleaning times and improving operational efficiency. Compared to traditional methods, it offers many advantages:

  • Reduction in waste and procurement costs – by recovering and reusing grit.
  • Greater safety – By keeping the work area clean.
  • Operational efficiency – Reduces downtime.
  • Easy material handling – Thanks to large containers and the use of pre-separators with conveyor discharge, transport and reuse are quick and easy.

Industrial Vacuums and pre-separator with conveyor discharge for abrasives

Three-phase vacuus such as the Puma and TXhave sufficient suction capacity to handle the collection of abrasives used in sandblasting processes. With powerful turbines (from 3 to 20 kW), they guarantee high negative suction pressure, allowing even the heaviest materials to be vacuumed.

To further optimize the management of these large quantities of material, it is possible to combine a pre-separator with a conveyor discharge, such as the hopper pre-separator. This system allows the grit to be collected continuously and discharged directly into Big-bags in a controlled manner without dispersion. An ideal solution for:

  • increasing operational autonomy
  • reducing machine downtime
  • efficiently managing the disposal or recovery of spent abrasives.

Cleaning the sandblasting cabin and collecting the abrasive from the floor

During sandblasting operations in the cabin, a significant amount of the abrasive used accumulates on the floor. Industrial vacuum cleaners facilitate the cleaning and recovery of this material quickly and efficiently, preventing accumulations that could compromise safety or slow down work cycles. Combined with pre-separators, they allow large volumes of grit to be collected directly from the floor, with the option of returning it to the cycle or disposing of it in an orderly manner.

Management of suspended dust

During the sandblasting process, a large amount of dust is generated, coming from both the abrasive material and the treated surface. This dust easily disperses into the environment, reducing visibility and compromising the quality of the work. To keep the sandblasting area clean and safe, it is essential to use an effective extraction system capable of quickly collecting fine dust and protecting operators throughout the entire process.

Vacuus for sand and grit: materials that can be vacuumed

Various types of grit and sand are used in the sandblasting process. Some abrasives can be recovered and reused several times, while others must be disposed of afterward.

  • Reusable materials: abrasives with high wear resistance, allowing for cost optimization and waste reduction, such as metal grit and aluminum oxide.
  • Materials to be disposed of after use – These tend to break up on impact and cannot be recovered, but are suitable for applications requiring a more delicate finish, such as silica sand and glass granules.

Three-phase industrial vacuum cleaners combined with a pre-separator allow for optimal management of large quantities of reusable grit.
