New ATEX 17348:2022 Standard for vacuum systems

Since March 2023, the ATEX 2014/34/EU directive has been supplemented by standard EN 17348:2022, which introduces very specific requirements for industrial vacuum cleaners intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, reducing the risk of ignition during vacuuming operations.

EN 17348:2022 – What has changed compared to previous directives?

The introduction of EN 17348:2022 has brought about a significant change in the regulation of ATEX-certified cleaners, introducing more specific technical criteria than the generic compliance of the ATEX 2014/34/EU directive. This European directive was the only regulatory reference for the certification of industrial vacuum cleaners intended for explosive environments, defining:

  • The essential health and safety requirements for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • The equipment categories (Group I and Group II) and their classification based on the required level of protection.
  • Product compliance with harmonized standards or a conformity assessment carried out by notified bodies.

However, this directive does not define detailed technical criteria for the design of extractors. To fill this gap, from March 2023 the EN 17348:2022 standard was introduced, which defined specific requirements for ATEX industrial vacuums, introducing more rigorous standards regarding explosion risks inside the vacuum and filtration levels.

Protection Against Explosion Risks Inside the Industrial Vacuums

While the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU only considers the risk of explosion deriving from the external environment, the standard EN 17348:2022 introduces a precise criterion, namely the classification of the ATEX zone inside the extractor, thus guaranteeing more complete protection. This guarantees that the atmosphere inside the vacuum cleaner does not reach conditions that could cause an explosion. The vacuum cleaner must be designed in such a way as to prevent these risk conditions from being created inside it, classifying and correctly evaluating the internal ATEX zone, just as is done for the surrounding environment.

Double level of filtration

One of the main innovations introduced by the harmonized standard EN 17348:2022 is the concept of a filtration barrier for vacuum cleaners certified for use in internal Zone 20, where there is a continuous or frequent presence of potentially explosive dust inside the collection container.

To ensure safe vacuuming, the standard requires a two-stage filtration system:

  • Primary filter (ISO 15E) with a minimum efficiency of 95%
  • High-efficiency HEPA filter, capturing at least 99.95% of particles

These specifications make compliant vacuum cleaners even safer by effectively retaining potentially hazardous dust and reducing the risk of explosions.
